The Prince of Persia series is experiencing a long-awaited resurgence. Following years of silence, the franchise has been revitalized with the release of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown this year, alongside planned DLC. Meanwhile, a remake of the beloved Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is also under construction. It appears, however, that Ubisoft is far from done with the series, as plans for another new installment are now coming to light.
Insider Gaming has revealed, courtesy of well-known leaker Tom Henderson, that a brand-new Prince of Persia project is currently in the works. Evil Empire, the independent team previously responsible for the hit game Dead Cells, is at the helm of this venture. Earlier in the year, Evil Empire announced it would cease updating Dead Cells to embark on fresh projects. It now seems this new direction involves crafting The Rogue Prince of Persia, a venture that marries the roguelite genre with a visual style reminiscent of classic Franco-Belgian comics like The Adventures of Tintin and Asterix.
Henderson's report outlines that the collaboration between Evil Empire and Ubisoft initially began with discussions at the Game Developers Conference in 2019, the same year Evil Empire came into being. The Rogue Prince of Persia reportedly commenced development shortly thereafter. Both companies are eyeing a strategy of releasing continual, free updates for the game, with the intention of refining and expanding the experience based on user feedback.
The move to distribute The Rogue Prince of Persia via Steam as an early access game later in the year marks Ubisoft's return to launching titles on Valve's platform from day one, a practice it hasn't engaged in since 2019. Details such as the exact release date, the duration of the early access phase, or the official announcement timeframe remain under wraps.
However, with Evil Empire gearing up for its newly announced Triple-i Initiative showcase on April 10, it is likely that more information about this intriguing new take on the Prince of Persia franchise will soon come to light.
